You’re not alone if you’re feeling worried about an upcoming tooth extraction. Many people become nervous when it comes to dental visits, especially if they’re undergoing a procedure that has the potential to cause discomfort. If you’re overly fearful, you might even avoid scheduling this potentially smile-saving treatment.
Thankfully, there are several proactive ways you can address your anxiety to help you get through your procedure. Continue reading to learn more about 3 of them!
Tip #1: Communicate Openly
Before recommending this treatment, you’ll have a consultation with your dentist so they can examine your condition to recommend appropriate solutions. If they’ve suggested an extraction and you have questions, this appointment is an ideal time to bring them up. Most providers are happy to provide as much information as necessary to help you feel confident about moving forward.
For example, you might ask them whether they offer sedatives and what type of technology will be used. You can also ask about their level of experience with the procedure and whether they have before-and-after photos of real patients they can share.
Tip #2: Bring Support
Some patients find it challenging to sit in the waiting room before their procedure when they already feel like a bundle of nerves. If you tend to worry whenever you’re sitting still, it might help to bring a trusted friend of family member with you to your appointment. That way, they can offer support and/or distract you until the dentist is ready to begin.
Not only that, but it’s a good idea to bring someone with you who can help drive you home afterward. This is especially true if you receive medications, like oral conscious sedation or IV sedation. You might still feel groggy if the drugs haven’t worn off and should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery for the next 24 hours.
Tip #3: Listen to Music
Many dentists offer additional amenities to help you feel calm during your visit and may even offer to play a specific radio station or type of music for you to listen to. If they don’t, you can ask them in advance if it’s acceptable to bring your headphones or earbuds with you to your appointment.
Listening to your favorite musician, playlist, podcast, or audiobook can keep your brain occupied, allowing you to be less focused on what your dentist is doing. Not only might this distraction reduce your anxiety, but it can also help your appointment feel like it moves faster because you won’t be dreading every moment.
If you’re still apprehensive about your upcoming extraction, you can contact your dentist to discuss available options to help you through it.
